HU volleyball team starts strong but falters

The Huntington University volleyball team took the opening set versus host Taylor University, but fell short in the following three frames to suffer a 1-3 defeat on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

After opening the match with a 25-18 win, the Foresters dropped the following two sets by matching scores of 19-25 before getting edged in the fourth frame, 24-26.

Huntington, 6-6, 1-1 in the Crossroads League, was paced offensively by junior Tailor Schultheis and freshman Brandy Michie, who produced 11 kills apiece. Senior Danielle Gurwell chipped in nine kills while sophomore Elaine Bredensteiner added two aces.

Junior Breanna Levings facilitated the scoring with 27 assists. Senior Emily Hubby pitched in 15 assists.

Defensively, seniors Kate Cobb and Mikayla Carpenter notched 25 and 15 digs, respectively. Gurwell had a hand in five blocks, two of which were solos, while senior Josie Beaver assisted on four blocks.

Taylor, 7-3, 1-1 in conference, got 13 kills from Becca Gerig, 33 assists courtesy of Haley Harrell and 24 digs from Laura Craig.
