Lady Vikes blast South Side in twinbill sweep

The Huntington North High School varsity softball team steamrolled visiting South Side, winning 12-0 and 17-1 in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 13.

In the opening game, the Lady Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before scoring four times in the second, six times in the third and once more in the fifth to cap the lopsided affair.

Senior Ariene Butler led the Huntington North offense with a hit, four runs batted in and three runs scored. Senior Mackenzi Cannici chipped in three hits and as many RBI while senior Jordyn Poulson contributed two hits, an RBI and three runs scored.

The Lady Vikes, 13-7, banged out eight hits to provide ample offensive support for Kendra Arnold in the circle. The junior hurler tossed all five innings, yielding just three hits and walking one to pick up the win.

The second contest saw Huntington North continue to dominate at the plate, as the team plated four runners in the first frame and six more in the second to craft a double-digit lead. Coach Paris Seibold’s squad then tallied four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth before South Side scored its only run of the twinbill in the fifth.

Cannici led the Lady Vikings with two hits, one of which was a home run, and five RBI with two runs scored. Sophomore Faith Leist went 4 for 4 with three RBI while senior Kelsie Vogleman and freshman Laney Shaw each produced two RBI.

Shaw handled pitching duties for Huntington North, limiting South Side to just two hits and the one run in five frames to get the win. She racked up eight strikeouts and issued just two walks.
