HU women split with Taylor
Wednesday, April 19, 2017 8:51 AM
The Huntington University softball team got a walk-off win in the opener but Taylor came back decisively in the second game for a doubleheader split on Tuesday afternoon, April 18.
Freshman Karley Blankenship smacked a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give HU a 4-3 win in the first game before Taylor dominated the nightcap to the tune of 10-2.
HU, 20-15-1, looked like it was headed to extra innings in the opener but Abby Keaffaber's two-out blooper in left fell in for a single. Ashley Brown, pinch-running for Keaffaber, then raced around the bases when Blankenship sent one to the fence.
Taylor, 28-13, took a 2-0 lead in the second inning but HU tied the contest in the third on two Taylor errors, a Camille Furrow grounder and a Sabrina Bethel hit. HU took the lead in the fourth on another Taylor error, Natalie McGuire's steal of second and a Casey Lehman double, but Taylor tied it in the fifth.
Lairen Miller got the complete game win, yielding eight hits and three runs, two earned, with one strikeout and two walks.
Miller and Bethel each had two of the Foresters' seven hits in the contest.
Taylor jumped all over Camille Furrow in the nightcap, notching six runs in the first four innings before finishing with a final four off Miller. The Trojans had 11 hits for the game.
Blankenship had two hits to lead HU in the nightcap.
