Sunday, April 16, 2017 1:01 PM
The Huntington University softball team swept host Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, April 15, winning 5-1, 5-3, behind a double mound win effort by freshman Lairen Miller.
Miller was stellar in the circle in the first game, yielding just one run on sixth hits in the complete game win. She then hurled three innings of scoreless relief in the nightcap to gain her 10th win of the campaign.
Casey Lehman had the biggest bat in the opener with a perfect 4 for 4 effort at the plate, with two runs batted in. Audra Klopfenstein added three hits.
In the nightcap, the Foresters rallied back form a 3-2 deficit behind Miler's pitching and the hitting heroics of Lehman once more. Lehman plated Natalie McGuire with the tying run in the fifth inning on a double to left-center, and her courtesy runner, Kaley Kitts, scored what proved to be the game-winner on Miller's fielder's choice.
Lehman had two hits and two RBI and Klopfenstein also had two hits.
HU is now 19-15-1 overall, 14-11 in Crossroads League play.
