Helmich places 30th at state swim meet
Sunday, February 12, 2017 11:15 AM
Emma Helmich, a senior on the Huntington North High School girls’ swim team, placed 30th in the preliminaries of the 100-yard butterfly at the Indiana Girls’ Swimming State Finals, held Friday, Feb. 10, at the Indiana University Natatorium, in Indianapolis.
Helmich touched the wall in 1:01.57 for her placement in the 32-swimmer field.
A top-eight finish would have qualified Helmich for the finals while placing ninth through 16th would have earned her a spot in the consolation finals, which were both held the following day, Saturday, Feb. 11.
While Helmich’s time was behind her sectional championship effort of 1:00.53, it did better the clocking of 1:04.10 she posted during her last trip to the state finals in the 100 butterfly in 2015.
Crown Point’s Hannah Kukurugya won preliminaries with a time of :53.26. She was bested in the finals, though, by Carmel’s Trude Rothrock, who clocked in at :52.97 to capture the state crown.
