Vikings pull away from New Haven for win

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team pulled away from host New Haven in the second half to post a 60-52 win on Saturday, Feb. 4.

With the game tied at the half, 25-25, the Vikings slipped ahead in the third quarter, 37-34. Coach Craig Teagle’s squad then proceeded to take its biggest lead of the contest, 56-46, in the final frame before riding out the eight-point victory.

With the win, Huntington North, 14-5, 6-0 in the Northeast 8 Conference, claims at least a share of the conference title.

Senior Hunter Hollowell led the Vikings with 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior Chazz Bruce chipped in 11 points to the visitors’ cause while sophomore Zach Daugherty added 10.

Huntington North shot a sizzling 60 percent from the field on 21 of 35 marksmanship. The Vikings added 13 points in 18 attempts at the free-throw line for 72.2 percent.

New Haven, 13-6, 5-1 in the NE8, got 13 points from Joey Rowan and 11 from Brecar Clark.

The Bulldogs converted 18 of 49 field goal attempts for 36.7 percent and 6 of 7 freebie tries for 85.7 percent.

Huntington North won the battle of the boards, 27-22. Senior Sam Daugherty corralled seven rebounds for the guests.

The Vikings also won the junior varsity contest, 55-47.

Sophomore Sawyer Stoltz logged a double-double for Huntington North, pairing 19 points with 14 boards. Sophomore Hank Pulver also contributed 19 points to the Vikings’ offensive effort while sophomore Trey Williams chipped in 17.
