Carroll nips Vikings in OT after late run

A late run by Carroll helped the host Chargers force overtime and edge the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team, 70-69, on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

The Vikings opened the fourth quarter with an 11-5 run that gave them their largest lead of the contest at 58-43. The Chargers, however, had a run in them as well. Carroll proceeded to score 20 points while limiting Huntington North to just five, which deadlocked the game at 63-63 by the end of regulation. The overtime period saw Coach Craig Teagle’s squad go scoreless from the field, but convert 6 of 7 free throw attempts, which helped it craft a 69-68 lead with 30 seconds to play. The hosts had the final cheer, though, as David Ejah made a layup in the game’s final seconds to give Carroll the narrow win.

The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for Huntington North, 13-5.

The Vikings opened the game in impressive fashion, erupting for 22 points while limiting the Chargers to 10 in the first quarter. Carroll narrowed the deficit to five points by halftime, 34-29, but Huntington North bumped its margin back out to nine, 47-38 by the end of three quarters.

Seniors Hunter Hollowell and Luke Pulver scored 16 points apiece to pace the Vikings. Pulver’s outing was highlighted by a 5 of 6 effort from beyond the arc. Huntington North also got 12 points from junior Mitchell Geller and 10 from senior Chazz Bruce.

Sophomore Zach Daugherty helped facilitate the Huntington North offense with seven assists.

The Vikings went 21 of 38 from the field for 55.3 percent and 20 of 26 at the charity stripe for 76.9 percent.

Carroll, 9-5, got a game-high 33 points from Jacob Redding. Daniel McKeeman tallied 14 points while Ejah finished with 12.

Ejah also pulled down a contest-high nine rebounds to give Carroll a 26-22 edge on the boards.

The Chargers converted 20 of 45 field goal attempts for 44.4 percent and 20 of 26 freebie opportunities for 76.9 percent.

Huntington North won the junior varsity tilt, 51-48.

Sophomore Sawyer Stoltz led the Vikings with 23 points and nine rebounds.
