Lady Vikes snap loss string with win over DeKalb

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 58-44 victory against host DeKalb on Friday, Jan. 27.

The Lady Vikings overcame their recent offensive struggles, which saw them unable to crack the 40-point barrier in any game during their skid.

A strong second half against the Lady Barons got Coach Heidi Lawson’s squad back on the right track. Huntington North connected on 13 of 25 shots for 52 percent in the second stanza, which helped it turn a 23-23 halftime tie into a 41-36 advantage by the end of three quarters and a 14-point win by the end buzzer.

Huntington North, 12-10, 5-2 in the Northeast 8 Conference, got a double-double from Kylie Kaylor. The senior tallied 19 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds, which helped the hosts narrowly win the battle of the boards, 32-31.

Junior Larissa Johnson chipped in 16 points for the Lady Vikings on 8 of 12 shooting while junior Rileigh Johnson added 14 points.

Huntington North trailed 13-10 after the first quarter before knotting the game up by halftime.

The Lady Vikings finished 20 of 49 from the field for 40.8 percent and 16 of 19 at the free throw line for 84.2 percent.

DeKalb, 9-13, 1-6 in NE8 play, got 23 points and 12 boards from Leigha Brown and 13 points from Alyson Noye.

The Lady Barons converted 14 of 43 field goal attempts for 32.6 percent and 13 of 17 freebie tries for 76.5 percent.

Huntington North routed DeKalb in the junior varsity contest, 38-17.

The Lady Vikings, 15-7, got 11 points from sophomore Peyton Dorsett and eight points from sophomore Erika Vinson.
