Viking defense stymies Wildkats

Strong defense through the first three quarters of the game lifted the Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team to a 53-42 win over visiting Kokomo on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The Vikings held Kokomo to just 21 points through the first three quarters of the contest, and despite the Wildcats matching that in the fourth quarter, Huntington was never really threatened for its 11th win in 15 outings this season.

Hunter Hollowell tossed in a game-high 20 points to lead the Vikings, moving past Mike Welker and into sixth place on the all-time Viking scoring list with 1,041 points in his career.

Chazz Bruce hit 7 of 9 shots from the field on his way to 14 points and Sam Daugherty notched seven for coach Craig Teagle's squad.

The Vikings took a 13-8 lead after the first quarter, stretched the margin to 26-17 by halftime and were up 37-21 entering the final frame.

Kokomo, 8-5, was paced by Anthony Barnard with 17 points and Keenen Wheeler with 12.

The Vikings hit 18 of 34 shots from the field for 52.9 percent, including 5 of 10 from three-point land, and connected on 12 of 16 free throw tries for 75 percent.

The Wildkcats hit 12 of 31 field goal attempts for 38.7 percent but hit all 12 of their free throws for a nifty 100 percent to keep the game in hand.

Bruce had seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Vikings in both of those categories.

The Viking junior varsity got 17 points and six rebounds from Trey Williams on the way to a 39-29 win over Kokomo.

Hank Pulver added nine points and Sawyer Stoltz had seven for HNHS.
