Wrestlers come from behind to defeat Churubusco

The Huntington North High School varsity wrestling team won nine of the final 11 contested matches to score a come-from-behind 42-21 win over host Churubusco on Monday, Jan. 11.

Pins by Logan Randle at 112 pounds, Sebastian Eckert at 119, Brant Hiple at 145 and Nick Cooper at heavyweight fueled the comeback and gave the Vikings their 15th win of the season against five losses.

The Vikings were down 15-0 after Lukas Wygant was beaten at 160 pounds and the Vikings forfeited at both 171 and 189. After that, however, it was almost all HNHS.

Alex Evans started the Viking comeback with a 4-3 win over Braxton Siddons at 215, followed by Cooper sticking Jay Lincomb to the mat in 1:33 at 285 pounds. Ian Hiers received a forfeit win at 103, followed by Randle pinning Clint Bechtold in 2:55 and Eckert stopping Austin Boggess in just 1:20.

Rob Newsome then beat Jason Nicodemus at 125, 5-2, and Colin Downey beat Adam Boggess at 130 by a 9-2 margin. Following losses by Alex Robinson at 135 and Tyler Robinson at 140, Hiple pinned Sam Siddons in 2:52 at 145, and Clinton Rosen topped Bryce Shively 9-2 at 152.

The HNHS junior varsity lost to its Churubusco counterpart, 28-6.

Winning for HNHS were Dakota Wibel at 145, and Andrew Mason at 285.
