HNHS has 4 champions, advances 10 to wrestling regional

The Huntington North High School wrestling team advanced 10 wrestlers to regionals - including four champions, at the Peru Wrestling Sectional on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Logan Randle at 112 pounds, Jamie Kuehl at 171, Zach Abbott at 189 and heavyweight Nick Cooper brought home championship hardware to lead the Vikings to second place as a team.

Randle, Kuehl and the unbeaten Abbott all lived up to their top seed billing, and Cooper overachieved, according to the seedings. The sophomore now takes a 17-7 mark to the Peru regional next Saturday, Feb. 7.

Also placing in the top four finishers to earn a trip to regional were Rob Newsome, fourth at 119 pounds; Colin Downey, second at 125 pounds; Alex Robinson, fourth at 130; Thomas Abbott, third at 145; Clinton Rosen, third at 152; and Kenny Morton, second at 215.

Zach Abbott, a senior, upped his unbeaten mark to 30-0 on the way to his sectional title. He topped Peru's Brett Worden and his 33-4 mark in the final.

Randle, a junior, improved to 31-4 heading into regional, and Kuehl, a senior, improved to 24-9. Randle got the best of Trevor Rebholz of Southwood, who was 27-8 heading into the final, and Kuehl took out John Ferry of Wabash and his 26-12 mark in the 171 final.

Cooper, a sophomore, beat Maconaquah freshman James Ulerick, 19-5, in their final.

Peru advanced to the team regional by winning with 274.5 points. Maconaquah placed third with 184.5, Southwood was fourth with 181, Northfield was fifth with 163 and Wabash was sixth with 138.5.

North Miami, Manchester and White's brought up the bottom three places, respectively.
