Mettler's pair of seconds paces HNHS to four at NCC track meet

Charles Mettler earned runner-up honors twice for the Huntington North High School boys' varsity track and field team as it claimed fourth at the North Central Conference Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University, in Marion, on Friday, May 10.

Mettler, a senior, was a silver finisher in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, running the former event in 4:30.86 and the latter in 10:01.29.

The Vikings finished with a register of 89 points in the seven-team field, which Kokomo topped with a tally of 128.

Houston Lehman also recorded a second place finish for Huntington North, making a leap of 11-0 in pole vault. The senior picked up additional points in high jump, where his bound of 5-10 captured fifth.

Senior Luke Doughty clocked in after Mettler in the 3,200, taking third with a time of 10:18.84. Doughty also earned fifth in the 1,600, crossing the line in 4:40.68.

Junior Adam Woods followed Lehman in pole vault, attaining third with an effort of 11-0, and was two spots behind his teammate in high jump, using a leap of 5-8 to snag seventh.

Colt Ropp produced points in both throwing events, securing fourth in discus with a toss of 135-10 and sixth in shot put with a lob of 42-10.

The 400-meter relay team came in third with a clocking of :45.15 while the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relay squads each placed fourth in 3:36.97 and 8:44.24, respectively.

Other Viking point-getters were senior Jordan Utter, fifth in the 400-meter run in :53.01; senior Drew Fawcett, fifth in long jump with an effort of 20-0.25; sophomore Isaac Smith, sixth in the 800 in 2:04.54, ahead of junior Austin Lange's 2:06.62 seventh place effort; and senior Andrew Sizemore, sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in :44.78, with freshman Mark Hultz coming in seventh in :46.50.

Marion's 106 points earned runner-up honors, followed by Muncie Central's 104, Huntington North's 89, Anderson's 75, Richmond's 63 and Logansport's 56.
