Goelz, Hale lead Viking diamond men past Marion

Devon Goelz and Austin Hale combined for six hits and four runs batted in as the Huntington North High School varsity baseball team defeated host Marion, 9-3, on Tuesday, May 6.

Hale also picked up the win on the mound for the Vikings, 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the North Cenral Conference, throwing the first 5.2 innings and yielding three runs, two earned, on four hits, with eighth strikeouts and five walks. Hale is now 3-1 on the season.

Goelz and Hale each had three hits and pair of RBI, Kory Goodrich had two hits and Mitch Hughes and Conner West both had two RBI.

The Vikings turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead with a trio of runs in the third inning. They added a fifth run in the fifth inning, and then closed with four more runs in the seventh.

A pair of walks and a stolen base got HNHS rolling in the fourth inning. Derek Snyder singled in the first run of the frame, Goelz got the second run home on another single and West hit yet another single for a run.

Goodrich and Hale linked one-out doubles to get the seventh inning rolling. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Goelz plated a run with a single, West took a hit by pitch for an RBI and Hughes knocked in the fourth run on a groundout.

Caleb Landrum pitched the final 1.1 innings for HNHS to get his second save of the season. He allowed one hit and no runs, with two strikeouts and no walks.
