Bowers' hit gives HU walk-off win in 13th in tourney
Sunday, May 4, 2014 12:06 PM
Senior Marc Bowers slapped a walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Huntington University baseball team a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded University of Saint Francis on Saturday, May 3, in first round action of the Crossroads League Tournament at Forest Glen Park.
Bowers' one-out game-winner sent Dalton Combs home after he and Michael Crowley had earlier singled and made a winner of reliever John Ripke, who pitched one-hit ball for the final three frames after starter Derek McKinney gave up just two earned runs in the first 10 innings.
Saint Francis opened the scoring with a solo tally in the second inning, and HU, 27-22, evened things at 1-all in the sixth. Both team pushed across a run in the 10th inning.
Austin Drummond tallied the first HU run as he led off the sixth with a single and moved up on Dylan Henricks' hit and a Blake Ayers' sacrifice bunt before scoring on a wild pitch.
After USF tallied in the top of the 10th, HU matched the score on a TJ Lindstrand ground-out that plated Drummond, who kicked things off with a walk.
Drummond, Crowley and Combs each had two of the Foresters' 10 hits.
McKiney gave up nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Ripke had a strikeout and walk in his stint.
The Foresters host top-seeded Mount Vernon Nazarene University Monday at 1 p.m.
