Spahr has game-winning hit in eighth as Vikings shade CC

Walker Spahr had the game-winning hit in the eighth inning and pitched a complete game to lead the Huntington North High School baseball team past host Columbia City, 3-2, on Friday, May 2.

Spahr, a junior, doubled in Derek Snyder to break a 2-2 deadlock in the top of the eighth, then somehow escaped in the bottom of the frame despite an HNHS error and a Columbia City hit.

Spahr cut down the potential tying run at the plate after Columbia City's Travis Herbst reached on an error and wound up on third to start the frame. Spahr threw the Eagles center fielder out at the plate on a ball hit by Gary Ormsby.

The Eagles reached Spahr for a pair of runs in the second, one coming on a solo homer, but got nothing else off the junior hurler the rest of the way, despite finishing with 10 hits. Spahr struck out eight and didn't allow a walk as HNHS improved to 10-3 on the season.

Snyder and Alex Easley each had two of the Vikings' seven hits off of Ryan Kerschner, who also went the full eight innings.

The Vikings cut the Eagles lead to 2-1 in the third inning on a single by Easley, a groundout and an error. They tied things in the fifth on another Easley single, a sacrifice by Snyder and a Devon Goelz double.
