Friday, May 2, 2014 4:02 PM
Host Dekalb steadily chipped away at early lead by the Huntington North High School varsity softball team and went on to hang the Lady Vikings with an 8-7 loss on Thursday, May 1.
Coach Paris Seibold's squad, 10-4, put up a three-spot on the Lady Barons in the first inning but watched the hosts match their solo tally in the second and pair of scores in the third to keep things close at 6-3. DeKalb finally got the better of Huntington North in the fourth, outscoring them 2-1 to trail just 7-5 before plating a trio of runs in the sixth to snatch away the lead for good.
Seniors Alyssa Hiple and Tori Newsome both smacked two-run home runs to pace the Lady Vikings on offense.
Junior Natasha Grover added a two-run triple while seniors Makayla Whaley and Kaylynn Rosen each supplied a pair of base pokes.
Freshman Hannah Middlebrooks struck out five, but allowed as many runs on six hits in three innings of relief to take the loss for Huntington North.
Mikayla Gray tossed the first three frames for the visitors, giving up four hits and striking out four.
