Forester SB team splits with Manchester

Taking a break from Crossroads League action, the Huntington University softball team split a doubleheader with host Manchester on Wednesday, April 23, winning 6-5 before losing 3-2.

Bess Fiechter smashed a triple and scored on Emily O'Leary's ground-out in the seventh inning to earn HU the opening-game win.

Fiechter tried to be the seventh inning hero of the second game, too, smashing a two-run homer to bring the Foresters within at run at 3-2, but Manchester pitcher MacKenzie Williams ended the uprising after that.

HU, 23-16 overall, trailed Manchester 5-4 in the sixth after the hosts put up a three-spot in the fifth, but HU caught up with an unearned run.

The Foresters' third pitcher of the contest, Lea Buckenmyer, earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief. It was her sixth win of the season.

Fiechter and Katie DePew each had two of HU's five hits in the second contest.

The game was a scoreless pitcher's duel until Manchester's Kaile Niezgodski sent one over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth. Manchester added a second run later in the frame, and got what proved to be the game-winner in the fifth.

Ariel Sheets got the loss for Huntington, giving up three hits and two runs, with six strikeouts and two walks.
