The Huntington University baseball team swept a doubleheader with host Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday, April 17, notching a 9-6 comeback win in the first game before logging an 8-4 victory in the second.
In the opening contest, the Foresters trailed 3-2 after the first inning, but knotted things up with a solo tally in the third. The Wildcats countered with a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to enjoy a 6-3 advantage heading into the game's final frame. That's when the visitors' bats came alive, though, and they erupted for six runs to steal the win.
Freshman TJ Lindstrand led Huntington's offensive effort with two hits and three runs batted in. Fellow rookie Shea Beauchamp and junior Avery Sneed added a pair of base pokes and as many RBI while freshman Dylan Henricks matched their hit total and scored a game-high three runs.
Senior Marc Bowers tossed the final two innings for the Foresters, shutting out Indiana Wesleyan and allowing only two hits to earn the win.
Sophomore Brock Gower got the start for Huntington and gave up seven hits and six runs, four of which were earned, in five frames.
The Wildcats' Justin Sovine surrendered six hits and five earned runs in 6.1 innings to take the loss.
In the nightcap, Huntington enjoyed a 5-1 lead through the first three innings before the hosts tightened things up to 5-4 with a trio of runs in the bottom of the third.
Forester hurler Blake Hohlbein held Indiana Wesleyan scoreless the rest of the way, however, and Coach Mike Frame's squad tacked on an insurance tally in the fourth and two more in the sixth to take the game to its final register.
Hohlbein struck out five and scattered eight hits and four runs across a complete game performance to get the victory.
Freshman Michael Crowley produced two RBI on as many hits for Huntington, which improves to 19-19 overall and 13-11 in the Crossroads League. Senior Austin Drummond supplied three of the Foresters' 14 base pokes while Beauchamp and Sneed each scored two runs.
The Foresters did the bulk of their damage against Jake Worrell, roughing up the Wildcat pitcher for 10 hits and seven runs, six earned, in 5.2 innings to hang him with the loss.
Indiana Wesleyan falls to 15-25, 12-12 in conference.
