Lady Vike spikers push Muncie Central hard, but fall in regional

The Huntington North High School varsity volleyball team pushed Muncie Central hard but the highly-regarded Lady Bearcats came out on top in three games in the opening round of the Muncie Central Volleyball Regional on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The Lady Vikings, finishing at 25-12 on the season, took the host school to within four points in the first and third games as they lost 25-21, 25-13, 25-21.

Muncie Central, which has been ranked in the top 10 for most of the season, went on to defeat Carroll in three games in the championship match to claim the regional title and advance to the state finals next week at Ball State University.

Melissa Grossman led the Lady Viking attack with 13 kills, and Ashli Rice added six kills and six digs. Allie Zahm contributed 25 assists and six digs, Morgan Broderick had 12 digs and Este Stoffel had four kills and nine digs.

The Lady Bearcats, 33-4, will be joined by Elkhart Memorial, 32-2; Floyd Central, 35-3, and Center Grove, 33-3, at Ball State.

Carroll beat Harrison in a five-game thriller to advance to the regional championship against Muncie Central, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-15, 16-14. In the championship, however, the Lady Bearcats won 25-20, 25-13, 25-18.
