Quartet powers HNHS swimgirls over Canterbury

The quartet of Emma Helmich, Cassy Lange, Katie Schenkel and Maggie Warpup powered the Huntington North High School girls' varsity swimming team to 109-68 win over host Canterbury on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

The four had a hand in the Lady Vikings winning 10 of the meet's 12 races to pull over .500 on the season at 2-1. Each swimmer logged two individual wins and the foursome came together to win a pair of relays.

Helmich, a freshman, won two 100-yard races, the butterfly and the breaststroke, in 1:08.88 and 1:22.27, respectively. Lange, a senior, claimed her victories in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, topping the former race in :27.73 and the latter in 1:11.12.

Schenkel, a junior, swam to first in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:33.42, followed by the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:01.74. Warpup was golden in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races, taking the shorter event in 2:15.96 and the longer one in 6:02.41.

The group's relay wins came in the 200-yard medley and the 400-yard freestyle, in 2:05.37 and 4:12.08, respectively.

Freshman Alexis Miller logged a second and third place finish for Coach Mycal Rodenbeck's squad, swimming to the silver spot in the 50-yard freestyle in :31.68 and the bronze position in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:23.37.

Emma Gordon, a freshman, claimed third in two freestyle races, swimming the 200-yard in 2:39.99 and the 500-yard in 7:31.44.

Freshmen Alivia Eiting and Alexandra Short, junior Alayna Kiefer and senior Lauren Speziali each supplied a third place finish to their team's effort. Eiting swam the 200-yard individual medley in 2:58.36, Short completed the 100-yard freestyle in 1:16.70, Kiefer touched the wall in the 100-yard fly in 1:28.53 and Speziali finished the 100-yard backstroke in 1:20.45.
