Spokesmen Cycling claims team champion honors at Bicycle Challenge

Spokesmen Cycling and Three Rivers Velo Sport claimed team champion honors at the 10th annual Huntington Bicycle Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Organizers noted the event raised approximately $8,000 for its two causes: Pathfinder Services to assist teenagers with developmental disabilities with scholarships to attend summer camp, and Parkview Home Health & Hospice's quality, end-of-life care of the terminally ill.

Spokesmen Cycling, based in Huntington, won the business team challenge 27-mile course, with Three Rivers Velo Sport, Fort Wayne, placing second and Fort Wayne Outfitters taking third. Spokesmen team members were Joe Bartels, Dan Gaz, Wes Ring, Carl Ring, Matt Tescula and Brendan Wise.

Three Rivers Velo Sport captured the first-ever all-women team award, with riders Kathy Boling, Janet Dickson, Sara Landrum, Sue Schafer, Charlotte Schmitz and Brenda Wiley.

The Three Rivers Velo Sport runner-up squad in the business challenge was made up of Shawn Fitzgerald, Matt Grate, Bill Lambert, David Park, Patrick Stelte and Graham Wedeven.

Fort Wayne Outfitters' team was comprised of Dan Grotrian, Tim Hall, Dodd Kattman, Henry Swinty, Jerry Witham and Denny Zech.

Organizers said a record number of more than 200 riders enjoyed bicycling on five different road courses.

Human Motor Works was the title sponsor for the event.
