Viking harriers place fourth at DeKalb Invitational

Junior Matt Dewitt's 12th place finish helped the Huntington North High School boys' varsity cross country team place fourth among 12 teams at the DeKalb Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Dewitt crossed the finished line in 18:12.5 for the 5K as the only Viking in the top 20, helping the squad to 136 points. Carroll dominated the meet with 37 points, Homestead was second with 74 and DeKalb was third with 88.

Senior Luke Doughty was second man for HNHS with 26th place in 18:34.9. Junior Tyler Brown was third with 33rd place overall in 18:42.7, junior Christian Jones was 40th in 18:56 and junior Cam Dewitt was 50th in 19:09.9.

Junior Kyler McVoy was one spot back of DeWitt with 51st in 19:11.2, and junior Austin Lange wrapped up the top seven with 59th place in 19:21.6.

Brayden Law of Homestead and Mark Beckmann of DeKalb blew away the field and placed first and second, respectively, despite having matching times of 16:27.9. Alex Beams of Fremont was third in 17:50.5, Clay Travis of DeKalb was fourth in 18:00 and Jaocb Schmeling of Carroll was fifth in 18:04.8.

Carroll runners placed fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth to explain the Chargers' domination.
