Viking shake off Wildkats, 9-7

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team shook off a big Kokomo rally in the sixth inning to score three times in the seventh and beat the host Wildkats, 9-7, on Tuesday, May 14.

The Vikings, 14-7 overall and 8-3 in the North Central Conference, were cruising along with a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth when Kokomo erupted for its half-dozen runs to tie the game. The Vikings, however, pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh and held Kokomo to just one more run in its half of the frame to get the win.

Braydin Stell had three hits and three runs batted in to lead the Viking offense, and he also got the mound win with 1.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.

Devon Goelz also had three hits for the Vikings, who banged out 15 for the contest. Connor West and Derek Snyder each had two safeties.

Viking starter Evan Brown went the first 5.2 innings, yield five runs, all earned, on seven hits, with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Vikings scored solo tallies in the first, second and fourth innings before pushing across three runs in the top of the sixth to obtain their 6-0 lead.

Kokomo, 11-10 overall and 6-5 in the NCC, got three hits from Preston Emmons.
