Although the Huntington North High School boys' varsity track team only captured one title at the North Central Conference Track and Field Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University's track and field stadium on Friday, May 3, it used a series of competitive finishes to place second with 104 points.

The Vikings' lone championship on the day came from Cordell Lewis in the 3,200-meter run. The senior crossed the line in 9:57.34 and was shadowed by teammate Charles Mettler, who finished second in 9:59.81.

Huntington's North only other silver finish came from Adam Berlier in pole vault, who had a bound of 12-6. Houston Lehman's 11-6 captured third.

Additional bronze finishes for the Vikings were a part of package deals, as Mettler's third in the 1,600-meter run in 4:34.65 was right before Lewis' 4:35.56, and Jon Rentschler's three-spot in discus on a throw of 134-10 just edged Nathan Sutter's own 134-10 in more tries.

The 1,600-meter relay squad, consisting of Andrew Spahr, Jake Shaw, Isaac Smith and Jordan Utter, placed third in 3:35.21, and the 3,200-meter relay unit of Luke Doughty, Aaron Ebert, Utter and Smith earned the team's other bronze medal with a finish of 8:42.36.

A slate of respectable finishes in field events netted additional points for the Vikings. Rentschler took fourth in shot put with a heave of 49-5 and Alex Kaylor was seventh with a 43-5. Drew Fawcett finished fourth in long jump with a leap of 20-8.5 and Spahr was sixth with a 19-11.75. Adam Wood's bound of 5-10 earned fifth in high jump and Lehman's 5-8 was good for seventh.

Other Huntington North points came via the 400-meter dash on Utter's fourth in 52.46 and Shaw's eighth in 53.68; the 800-meter run with Austin Lange's fifth in 2:07.08 and Doughty's sixth in 2:07.76; the 400-meter relay team, composed of Andrew Sizemore, Fawcett, Spahr and Smith, which finished sixth in:45; and in the 300-meter hurdles on Aaron Ebert's eighth in 45.09.

Kokomo won the meet with 134 points. After Huntington North's tally was Marion's 85, Anderson's 76, Richmond's 74, Muncie Central's 58, and Logansport and New Castle tied with 46 points.
