Lady Vikes split twinbill with Anderson

The Huntington North High School varsity softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Anderson on Saturday, April 27, taking the first game 10-0 while dropping the second 8-1.

With only the first game counting against the Lady Vikings' conference record, ace Erin Rethlake took the mound and pitched a complete game shutout, ceding only a hit and a walk to go with 10 strikeouts.

Huntington North's batters held up their end of the bargain, spotlighted by Kaylynn Rosen's 3 for 4 performance with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Cassie Lange, Makayla Whaley and Alyssa Hiple also banged out three hits, with the latter scoring a game-high three runs, and Huntington North as a team ripped 17 hits.

Rethlake had two pokes and as many runs and Maddi Kennedy also had a pair of hits.

The Lady Vikings put two runs on the board in the first inning, followed by three in the third, two in the fourth and a trio of insurance tallies in the sixth.

Sydney Schmitt took the loss for Anderson, surrendering 12 hits and eight earned runs in 5.1 innings.

Huntington North, 9-1, 2-0 in the North Central Conference, turned pitching duties over to Mikayla Gray and Tori Newsome in the second game.

The duo gave up a combined 10 hits and the Bruins jumped out to a three-run lead after the first inning, plated three more in the fourth and got two insurance tallies in the sixth.

The Lady Vikings' lone score came on a fifth inning solo home run by Rethlake, her fifth of the season.
