Forester softball team falls twice to ONU
Monday, March 25, 2013 11:49 AM
The Huntington University softball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Olivet Nazarene University, 4-1, 8-0, on Saturday, March 23.
In game one, the Tigers managed to keep the Foresters, 2-2, off the board for the first five innings and built a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
That's when Huntington found its swing, as Bailey McIntire and Annie Weaver belted out back-to-back singles to get on base. Though the next two Forester batters struck out, McIntire and Weaver made things happen on the base paths with a swipe apiece, the former stealing third and the latter grabbing second. Katie Knous broke the shutout when she singled McIntire home, but Weaver was tagged out to end the inning.
The Foresters held the Tigers scoreless at the top of the seventh, but a Cristin Carter single in Huntington's portion of the frame was bracketed by a pair of Forester strikeouts but Kaitlyn Troyer couldn't bring her teammate home, going down swinging.
No Huntington batter managed more than one hit against Olivet Nazarene's Caitlin Santefort, who went the distance for the Tigers on the mound and yielded only five hits, issued a single walk and punched out 14.
Hannah Gardner had the big stick for Olivet Nazarene, going 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run.
Marcie McDougle was the losing pitcher for the Foresters, giving up 16 hits over seven innings.
Huntington couldn't get going in the second game, managing only three hits against the Tigers' Virginia McAndrews, who struck out seven over six innings for the shutout.
Katie Megyesi, Hannah Gardner, Joydyn Truelock and Lindsey Krippel each had two hits for Olivet Nazarene.
Huntington's Katie Bowers went 1 for 3 with a double.
Ariel Sheets, Emily Puterbaugh and Kaylin Yon took the mound for the Foresters, surrendering a total of 11 hits and eight runs, seven of them earned, with Sheets taking the loss.
