Viking swimmers end season at Warsaw sectional

State hopes for the Huntington North High School boys' varsity swimming team in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay ended at the Warsaw Boys' Swimming Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 16, when both teams replicated their eight-place finishes from two days prior.

Placing eighth on the sectional's first day of competition on Thursday, Feb. 14, earned each team a shot at swimming for state on Saturday, but only a first-place finish or meeting the state standard time granted advancement to the state finals.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Walter Hacker, Kellen Hughes, Nathan Lundy and Josh Lundy clocked in at 1:58.69, a second faster than their time in preliminaries, but not fast enough.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Josh Lundy, Nathan Lundy, Hacker and Austin Lange finished six seconds faster than they did in preliminaries, with a 3:51.80, but they were still 32 seconds off the pace set by first place Warsaw.

Hacker had the best showing for the Vikings in the consolation finals, which determined ninth through 16th place points, capturing ninth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.43. Hacker also grabbed 11th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.96.

Also swimming for Huntington North was Zane Cozad, who finished 10th in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:33.22 and 13th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.39; Lange, swimming to 12th in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.42 and 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.69; Josh Lundy, who placed 12th in the 100-yard freestyle in :56.24 and 15th in the 50-yard freestyle in :25.69; Nathan Lundy, finishing 15th in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.63; and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lange, Cozad, Hughes and Dakota Wibel, which placed 11th in 1:49.76.

The Vikings' efforts yielded 100 points, landing them eighth out of 12 teams.

Warsaw won the sectional with a tally of 498.5.

Huntington North loses only three swimmers to graduation.
