Freshman Daniel Woll came off the bench to score 19 points and the Huntington University men's basketball team cruised to its 10th win without a loss in a 75-62 win over Spring Arbor University on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Woll nailed 7 of 10 shots from the field, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc to provide back-up to Shane Merryman, who led the Foresters with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Woll scored nine points in an 11-2 run midway through the first half to turn a two-point lead into a 28-17 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half.
The freshman scored 14 of his points in the first half as HU built a 45-26 lead. Spring Arbor could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.
TJ Short and Derek Hinen added to the HU cause with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Hinen and Merryman each dished out five assists as well.
Rob Hogans scored a game-high 24 points for SAU, but was the only Cougar to reach double figures.
The Foresters hit 17 of 30 shots from the field in the first half but fell off to a 7 of 23 effort in the second half to finish the game at 24 of 53 for 45.3 percent. They hit 22 of 27 shots from the free-throw line for 81.5 percent.
Their hosts hit 24 of 52 field goal tries for 46.2 percent and 10 of 13 from the stripe for 76.9 percent.
Behind Merryman, HU won the battle of the boards, 37-26.
After the Cougars' Thomas Starks hit a short shot to pull SAU within two at 17-15, Woll took over for the next two minutes or so to push HU to a double digit margin. The 6-6 frosh started with a three-pointer off a Merryman assist, then TJ Short fed him for a bucket in the paint. The Cougars' Hogans and the Foresters' Hinen then traded buckets before Woll finished the spurt with another pair of buckets.
