The Huntington County Community School Board of Trustees unanimously voted against sending the corporation's four new administrators to a training seminar during their meeting on Monday, Nov. 11.
The seminar was designed to teach the administrators how to conduct phone interviews during the corporation's hiring process - and cost HCCSC $1,300 per employee.
Currently, the corporation uses Region 8 Education Service Center to "weed out" job applicants, noted HCCSC Superintendent Tracey Shafer. First, applicants take an online assessment at the Region 8 website. If a passing score is received, they move on to a phone interview with the building's administrator. As it stands, the four new administrators will not be able to perform those phone interviews.
"This is ample opportunity to look at another alternative (for the hiring process)," says Secretary Scott Hoffman, District 1, "We need to discuss if we want to continue with this model."
Shafer recommended that the board keep with the current hiring model under Region 8 Education Service Center.
In the coming weeks, the board plans to discuss alternatives to the current operation.

• New coaches were hired: Tyler Abbott, assistant baseball, Huntington North High School (HNHS); Andrew Drummond, assistant baseball, HNHS; Andrew Enderle, assistant baseball, HNHS; Jarod Hammel, JV head baseball, HNHS; Jeff Phillips, assistant baseball, HNHS; and Stan Sands, fifth grade girls' basketball, Northwest Elementary School.
• Andrews Elementary accepted a donation of $265.20 from Teachers Credit Union to purchase "Time for Kids" for second grade.
• President Kevin Patrick gave a special presentation of his experience at the ISBA/IAPSS Fall Conference. He noted that there is no perfect learning model, but he hopes to someday see one that makes parents, students and teachers equally accountable for a students' education.
