Bill A. Garshwiler, 88, of Fort Wayne, IN, and formerly of Irish Lake, IN, and Bippus, IN, died Thursday May 23, 2013, at 7:03 p.m. at Covington Commons, Fort Wayne.
Mr. Garshwiler served in the United States Army during World II. He started working at Bippus State Bank as a teller in 1947 and was promoted to assistant cashier in 1953. He advanced to cashier and secretary of the board from 1963 to 1973, and became president in 1980. He retired as chairman of the board in 2000.
Mr. Garshwiler was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Huntington and a present member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Arcola. He was a life member and past commander of American Legion Post 7, a member of Huntington VFW Post 2689 and 40 & 8 in Huntington and Roanoke, where he served as chef-de-gare.
He was born Nov. 28, 1924, in Wabash County to Frank and Ruth Hanselman Garshwiler. He married Ruth E. Bartrom on July 7, 1951, in Huntington. She survives in Fort Wayne.
Also surviving are two daughters, Linda (Thomas) Scribner, of Fort Wayne, and Julie Garshwiler, of Huntertown; a son, Tadd (Jean) Garshwiler, of Huntertown; four grandchildren, Paul (Emily) Scribner, of Jacksonville, NC; Patrick (Jessamine) Scribner, of Liberty Township, OH; and Jenny (Jessie) Moore and Scott Garshwiler, both of Fort Wayne; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Garshwiler's remains have been donated to the Indiana University Medical School. A celebration of life gathering will be held Friday, June 14, 2013, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Roanoke Memorial Chapel of Deal-Rice Funeral Homes, 240 Crestwood Drive, Roanoke. A memorial mass will be held Saturday June 15, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Arcola, with a rosary service preceding at 10 a.m. Rev. Alex Dodrai will officiate.
