The town of Markle will use its CEDIT allocation from Wells County to help pay for the reconstruction of Tracy Street, Markle Town Council members affirmed at their meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
The town, because it lies in both Huntington and Wells counties, receives CEDIT funds through both counties. Town leaders must submit a spending plan for those funds, which it approved Wednesday for the approximately $25,000 it expects to receive through Wells County.
The Tracy Street reconstruction project is now in the design phase and some preliminary acquisition of rights of way is being conducted. Construction will begin no earlier than the spring of 2014.
The street will be widened, underlayment will be replaced, curbs and gutters will be added to improve drainage and a sidewalk will be added on the southern part of the street.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $2.1 million. The town has received a grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation for 80 percent of the cost, and the town must provide a 20 percent local match.
In other business, council members approved an ordinance that will allow the council to decide what will be painted on the new water tower in the Markle Industrial Park.
Previously, authority to regulate signs on municipal buildings fell to the Markle Plan commission. With the plan commission's blessing, the town council transferred that authority to itself.
With an eye toward bringing in some revenue to help keep water rates low, the council asked for bids from local companies to have their names featured on the water tower. Only one company, Novae Corp., submitted a bid.
The council is in the process of deciding what slogans will be painted on the water tower.
The council reviewed a plan to bring town buildings and programs into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Community input on the plan was received in December. Information about the plan is available from Markle ADA Coordinator Mike Grant at 758-3193.
