Robert E. Gavin Sr., 76, of Decatur, IN, and having family members in Huntington, IN, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at 2:43 am. at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mr. Gavin was a veteran of the United States Army and was a member of American Legion Post 43, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge 1311, all in Decatur. He had worked for Yost Prestress and Automatic Sprinkler Corp. and was a truck driver for ATL. He retired in 2008.
He was born Sept. 15, 1936, in Wells County to George Dewey and Edna Mae Bennett Gavin. He married Barbara J. Burdg on Feb. 6, 1982, in Decatur, and she survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Robin (Ray) Prior and Rhonda (Jerry T.) Andrews, both of Decatur; a son, Robert (Julie) Gavin Jr., of Decatur; a stepson, Timothy Wolfe, of Fort Wayne; a stepdaughter, Karen Razo, of Decatur; a brother, Bill Gavin, of Liberty Center; a sister, Betty Abenath, of Huntington; seven grandchildren, Joe (Teresa) Fuhrman, Connie Fuhrman, Lindsey (Andrew) Stimpson, Brice Gavin, Katie (Zach) Neuenschwander, Kirstie Andrews and Kole Andrews; four step-grandchildren, Brandon Razo, Jenna Razo, Ty Razo and Jamie Razo; and five great-grandchildren.
A service was held on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, with Rev. Michael Heinbaugh officiating. Interment was at the M.R.E. Cemetery, Berne, with graveside services by the American Legion Post 43 Color Guard.
