The Huntington County Council approved the addition of one deputy - not three as originally proposed - to Sheriff Terry Stoffel's staff during their meeting on Nov. 26.
Stoffel told council members that although he had approached the council previously with a request for three additional deputies, he decided to revise the request - asking only for one additional deputy - in response to budgetary concerns presented by the council at its meeting last month.
With the approval from council, the sheriff says he will begin the hiring process immediately.
The council also approved the budget for the Local Anti-drug Coalition Effort (L.A.C.E.), which awards grants to local organizations such as The Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, Huntington University, Bowen Center and Youth Services Bureau for programs that promote criminal justice and prevention.
County Commissioner Kathy Branham presented a request to increase the salaries for the new IT Department Director Matt Taylor and Assistant Director Ryan Wall.
The council denied her request on a 4-3 vote with council members Chris Hoke, Joel Harris, Todd Landrum and Kendall Mickley voting against the proposal.
The Emergency Management Agency requested permission to encumber funds into the 2013 budget to allow the discussion of purchasing a new building to house its vehicles. The council approved the request by consensus.
The EMA was also granted permission by the council to begin advertising for a new director for the organization. The position is currently being filled by Kathy Juillerat, who is a part-time clerk. The position has been vacant since the contract of the previous director, Brandon Taylor, was not renewed last December.
In other business:
• County Treasurer Cindy Yeiter announced the addition of Cheryl Albright to her staff, where she will be working as deeds deputy.
• A report of the transition policy for emergency dispatchers from the city of Huntington who are in the process of becoming Huntington County employees was approved by council.
• The council tabled the discussion of a proposal from Community Corrections to spend grant money, the transfer of money to fund a shortage in office supplies of the probation department and the adoption of the 2013 salary ordinance.
