Call out and registration for this year's Huntington County Wrestling Club is on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and Thursday, Nov. 29, at Crestview Middle School, in Huntington, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Neil Teusch is entering his fourth year with the club and his second as its director, during which time he's helped introduce several new features. For example, the club started a preseason this year, before the call out, and 35 kids are participating in it.
"Our numbers are growing," he says.
Also among the club's recent features is a tournament for beginning wrestlers, which was introduced last year, and a team for wrestlers seeking to compete on a national stage, which is entering its third year.
For Teusch, the goal is to get kids interested in wrestling and help them maintain that interest.
"We're a feeder program," he says. "We're supposed to introduce the sport to the kids and hopefully from the elementary we get them into the junior high and then to junior high they go into high school."
"We want them to learn to love the sport themselves," he continues. "I don't want to have to force a kid to love the sport. If we show them what wrestling's about and teach them good technique and the fundamentals of the sport, then hopefully they'll learn to love it themselves.
"As long as you keep it fun and keep everything moving, then most of the kids will hopefully go on."
While there is a fee to join the club, Teusch emphasizes that the club is not in the business of turning people away if money is an obstacle.
"If you can't afford it, don't make that a reason why your kid can't participate, because we're going to make sure that if they want to compete, they can compete," he says. "Or if they just want to come to practice and learn about wrestling, we're going to make sure they can do it."
Practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Dec. 4, at Crestview.
"We're on our way up," says Teusch. "A lot of good things are happening. We're trying to keep it as fun as we can for the kids."
