Russell "Babe" Newell

Russell "Babe" Newell Jr., 85, of Huntington, IN, died Friday, June 19, 2020, at 1:15 a.m. at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis from complications due to COVID-19.

Mr. Newell was a conductor for 22 years for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. He was a member of East State Street Church of God, now Faith Community Church of God. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a cook.

He was born Jan. 22, 1935, to Russell and Margaret Parry Newell. He married Angelus “Angie” Godbold on Jan. 23, 1954, in Indianapolis, and she preceded him in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Jane (Daniel) Neufelder, of Indianapolis; Carol Cline, of Lakeland, FL; and Debra (Scott) Janicki, of Wakarusa; a son, David (Linda) Newell, of Scotland, PA; a sister, Barbara Claybaugh, of Dayton, FL, a sister-in-law Mary Newell, of Ninevah; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Huntington County. In celebration of his life, the family will follow a processional route through the streets of Huntington, the town he and his wife called home for more than 60 years. The procession will begin at Bailey-Love Mortuary, past his former home on Byron Street and will conclude at a private graveside service for family members only.

A public celebration of Mr. Newell’s life will be planned in Huntington at a later date.
