Nancy L. Smith

Nancy L. Smith, 74, of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at Heritage Pointe of Huntington.

Mrs. Smith and her two sisters and later with their younger brother sang in The Myers Trio at many churches, church camp and gospel concerts throughout western Ohio when they were growing up. She received her bachelor’s degree from Huntington College in 1972 in elementary education and received her master’s degree from Indiana University in 1976. She was an elementary teacher from 1972 to 2002. Her teaching career was at Central Elementary School in Huntington, teaching third, fourth and fifth grades. She was active in Classroom Teachers’ Association and Indiana State Teachers’ Association. She promoted the need for school replacement that resulted in the Flint Springs Elementary school construction.

Mrs. Smith volunteered as a tutor with Youth Services Bureau and also served on the board and volunteered at Huntington Red Cross. She was active in College Park Church for more than 50 years. She sang in the choir and served as a Sunday school teacher, primary worship leader and vacation Bible school teacher. She was elected to local administrative board and served as lay delegate to denominational district and national conferences.

She was born Jan. 5, 1946, in Stockport, OH, to J. William and Nancy H. Paxton Myers. She married Gerald D. Smith on Aug. 19, 1967, and he survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Michael (Jennifer) Smith, of Huntington; two sisters, Martha (Paul) McCarter, of Pinellas Park, FL, and Lenora (James) Johns, of San Antonio, TX; a brother, John (Carolyn) Myers, of Helotes, TX; and three grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Caleb Smith and Hannah Smith, all of Huntington.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
