Betty Z. Woods

Betty Zane Woods, 93, of Peoria, IL, and having ties to Huntington, IN, died May 2, 2020, at the Liberty Village in Peoria, IL.

She was born April 28, 1927, in LaGrange, GA, to Karl and Zada Benfield Gallagher. She married Joseph Woods on Aug. 26, 1946, in Huntington, at SS. Peter and Paul Church, and he preceded her in death in 2012.

During World War II Mrs. Woods served as a singer with the USO. She graduated from Greensboro High School in North Carolina in 1946. She and her husband lived their entire married lives in Fort Wayne, IN. In addition to raising eight children,
Mrs. Woods was very involved in the parishes of Precious Blood and St. Vincent’s and The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. She was a member of the choir as well as a member of the Rosary Society, PTA and other parish organizations.

Mrs. Woods also had career as a seamstress at JCPenney, specializing in making and altering wedding dresses. She worked for Penney’s for over 30 years. She moved to Peoria in 2018, and spent the final 17 months of her life at Liberty Village in Peoria.

Surviving include three sons, Milton (Audrey) Woods, Michael (Julie) Woods and Timothy (Jennifer) Woods; four daughters, Jeanne (Larry) Clark, Mary Woods, Karla (Jim) Lamley and Anne (Tim) Kennedy; 23 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Woods.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a private service will be held. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne.
Memorials are to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
