Dennis R. Opal

Dennis R. Opal, 77, of Fort Wayne, IN and formerly of Huntington, IN, died Jan. 3, 2020, at his residence.

Mr. Opal graduated from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis in 1960.  He attended Indiana University.  He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked at Jack Dustman & Associates in Indianapolis for seven years. He purchased the Dairy Queen Brazier in Huntington in 1972 and operated it for 28 years. He also owned several other Dairy Queen restaurants in the area. In the early 1990s, he operated a GTE/Verizon wireless agency in Huntington for 22 years. During this time, he started Opal Development Inc., and operated 40,000 square feet of professional offices, including North Pointe Properties.                                                              

Mr. Opal was on the board of what is now Pathfinders Services for six years, serving as president in his last year. He was a founding member of Life Long Learning of Huntington County. He was a member of the VFW Post 2689 in Huntington and American Legion Post 160 in Roanoke.  He was a third degree in Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Fort Wayne, and a former member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntington.  
     
He was born Feb. 15, 1942, in Grand Rapids, MI, to George A. and Eleanore Barziekowski Opalewski. He married Ann L. Ware on Dec. 17, 1994, and she survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Paul A. (Jody) Opal, of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Lynn E. (Chris) Frank, of Salsbury, NC; a stepson, Doug (Kris) Coyle, of Huntington; a stepdaughter, Margie Coyle, of Grand Rapids, MN; a brother, Lawrence (Barbara) Opal, of McDonough, GA; a sister, Lois Bromley, of Haddenfield, NJ; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Leslie E. Opal.    
 
Calling is Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with recitation of the Rosary at 4 p.m., at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home 715 N. Jefferson St.  Huntington. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, at 10 a.m., with one hour of calling prior to Mass, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Huntington.
