Bernita 'Bea' Schmalzried

Bernita “Bea” Schmalzried, 94, of West LaFayette, IN, and formerly of Huntington County, IN, died Thursday, Aug. 15, at St. Anthony Nursing Center in Lafayette.

Mrs. Schmalzried was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Huntington, for 75 years. She graduated from Emmaus Lutheran School and South Side High School in Fort Wayne and from Huntington University and the University of St. Francis. She was an elementary educator at St. Peter Lutheran School, Central School and Horace Mann Elementary. She was a member of The First Mothers Club, Sigma Eta Fine Arts Sorority, MacDowell Music Club, Shakespeare Club, St. Peter Lutheran Quilters, Huntington County Literacy Coalition, Huntington County Retired Teachers’ Association.

She was born Feb. 19, 1925, in Fort Wayne to Sidona and Emanuel H. Eggers.  She married Eugene W. Schmalzried on Aug, 14, 1949, in Huntington, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2004.

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy (John) Maylath, of West Lafayette, with whom she lived for the past four years;  a son, Daniel Schmalzried, of Huntington;  four grandchildren, Jeremy (Margie) Maylath, of West Lafayette, Matthew (Tuyin An) Maylath, of Statesboro GA; Megan Schmalzried, of Hong Kong; and Shannon Schmalzried, of Michigan;  and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Dustin Schmalzried.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Huntington.
