Dr. Gerald E. Gerig

Dr. Gerald I. Gerig, 91, of Berne, IN, and having family in Huntington, IN, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, at Swiss Village in Berne.
Dr. Gerig was a graduate of Berne High School and following high school he served in the United States Navy. He received a bachelor’s degree in sacred music from Fort Wayne Bible College. Following that, he traveled, along with Rev. Robert Magary, in five countries holding meetings for Youth for Christ. When he returned from that trip, he took another year of training at the Bible college, then served as field representative for the college. He later became pastor in Dodge City, KS; and then at missionary churches in Decatur and Berne. He then served as editor of the Berne Tri-Weekly newspaper and later had a private counseling ministry. In California, he pastored the Missionary Church in Van Nuys and later became the associate and interim pastor of the First Baptist Church of Van Nuys. Upon his return to Berne, he served on the staff of First Missionary Church, doing administration and hospital visitation.
He was born April 25, 1927, in Woodburn to Rev. Chris and Rose Kliewer Gerig. He married Coyla Crow on Aug. 3, 1951, in Fort Wayne, and she preceded him in death in August 2009.
Survivors include a son, Kurt (Jo) Gerig, of Berne; two daughters, Marcia (Ray) VanGelder, of Johns Creek, GA, and LuAnn (Dan) Fulton, of Huntington; two sisters, Geraldine Gerig, of Fort Wayne, and Berdaline Cleveland, of Spring Arbor, MI; a sister-in-law, Caroline Gerig, of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Calling is Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at t Swiss Village Chapel for the residents and staff. Additional calling will be Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at First Missionary Church. A funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, at 11 a.m. at the church, with calling one hour prior. Rev. Max Haines and Rev. Dathen Foust will officiate. Interment will follow in the MRE Cemetery.
