Vernon R.D. Bird

Vernon R.D. Bird Sr., 80, of Huntington, IN, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018, at 1:54 p.m. at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Bird served in the United States Army and then worked as a mechanic for the Indiana State Highway Department, retiring after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Kendallville.

He was born Aug. 10, 1938, in Bronson, MI, to David and Rosella Waters Bird. He married Julie M. Williamson on May 22, 1970, in Huntington, and she survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Vernon (Berniece) Bird Jr., of Zanesville; a brother, Charles (Janet) Spencer, of Zanesville; a sister, Rosella (Tom) Stouder, of Huntington; and a grandson, Jacob Bird.

Calling is Monday, Nov. 19, 2018, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Drive, Huntington. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, at 10 a.m. at the mortuary, with Rev. Michael Pieart officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Huntington, with military graveside rites performed by VFW Post 2689 of Huntington.
