Joyce D. Roethler

Joyce Darlene Roethler, 76, of Van Buren, IN, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at 1:10 p.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor in Marion, IN.

Mrs. Roethler was a 1959 graduate of Van Buren High School. She obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana State University. She served in the United States Marine Corps, being stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina from 1959 to 1960. She moved to Alaska, living there for 14 years until moving back in 2008. When she was in Alaska, she was a veterans’ advocate and helped work on a bill that provided a permanent "Women's Veterans Day" in the state of Alaska. She also assisted in developing a state veterans’ cemetery in Alaska. She was a member of the Amvets Post 5 in Marion and several Amvets posts in Alaska.
 
She was born Aug. 9, 1941, in Marion to Dale W. and Louise Enyeart Miller. She married Richard Roethler on Dec. 19, 1997 in Fairbanks, AK; he preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 2002.

Survivors include two sons, Michael (Marie) Buff, of Marion, and James "Rusty" (Stacey) Buff, of Gas City; two daughters, Tara (John) Street, of Van Buren, and Rebecca Buff, of Wintergarden, FL; a stepson, Brad (Aldie) Amundson, of Oregon; 16 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

A son, Dale Buff, also preceded her in death.

Calling is Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at the Van Buren United Methodist Fellowship Hall, 105 2nd St., Van Buren, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A celebration of life service will follow immediately at 5 p.m., with Rev. Cindy Osgood officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in the Gardens of Memory in rural Marion. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery.
