Thais R. Wilhelm

Thais R. Wilhelm, 87, of Huntington, IN, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, at 4:50 a.m. at Tipton Place, in Huntington.

Mrs. Wilhelm served as Huntington County sheriff for 10 years and was the first elected female sheriff in Indiana. She retired from the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department, where she had worked for a total of 36 years. She had also served as Huntington County assessor and Huntington Township assessor and worked at the Huntington License Branch.

A 1947 graduate of Huntington High School, she was a lifetime member of Central Christian Church. She served on the boards of directors for The Salvation Army, Youth Service Bureau, REMC and ABWA of Huntington County.

She was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Huntington to Homer Sr. and Leila Getz Carl. She married Ivan E. Wilhelm on June 19, 1949, at Central Christian Church, in Huntington, and he survives.

Additional survivors include three daughters, Leslie (Allen) Myers, of Fishers; Jennifer (Ken) Koch, of North Royalton, OH; and Lisa (Rick) Fusselman, of Huntington; two sisters, Janice Eller, of Mentone, and Catherine Stayner, of Huntington; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Calling is Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, from noon to 4 p.m., with a service following at 4 p.m., at Central Christian Church, 500 MacGahan St., Huntington. Rev. Chris Hayden will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Etna Cemetery, Huntington County.
