Dr. Russell E. Griffith Jr.

Dr. Russell E. Griffith Jr., 93, of Oxford, OH, and a former resident of Huntington, IN, died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, in Sarasota, FL.

Dr. Griffith graduated from Huntington High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Huntington College in 1947. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Miami University, in Oxford, OH, and a doctorate from Indiana University. He taught at Miami University for 40 years and was professor emeritus of zoology-physiology. He represented Miami University in establishing Wright State School of Medicine in Dayton, OH.

Dr. Griffith served in the United States Navy during World War II and later served as an officer, including commanding officer of the unit for three years, of the Naval Reserve Unit in Hamilton, OH. He was a member of Kiwanis for more than 50 years and served as president and lieutenant governor of the Ohio Fifth Division. He was awarded Citizen of the Year in Oxford, OH, in 1966; Most Outstanding and Effective Teacher at Miami University in 1971; and, with his wife, Parents of the Year at Miami University in 1979.

He was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Akron, OH, to Russell E. and Mary Kathryn Griffith. He married Marilyn M. Kauff on Sept. 28, 1946, in Huntington, and she survives.

Additional survivors include three daughters, Sondra (Roy) Witherington, of Sarasota, FL; Judith (Scott) Ransom, of Winchester, TN; and Barbara (Robert) Hottle, of Hillsboro, OH; two sons, David (Elaine) Griffith, of Maitland, FL, and Russell (Cynthia) Griffith III, of Encinitas, CA; a brother, Harold D. (Beverly) Griffith; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hart; 15 grandchildren, Lisa Torres, Jason Swift, Matthew Averbeck, Tracy Ransom, Audra Ransom, Whitney Cowles, Laura Brooker, Allison Gabbard, Susanna Farraday, Michael Hottle, Daniel Hottle, Rachael Griffith, David Griffith, Mitchell Griffith and Connor Griffith; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Calling is Tuesday, July 18, 2017, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a service following at 3 p.m., at Ogle & Paul R. Young Funeral Home, 5086 College Corner Pike, Oxford, OH. Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery, in Oxford, OH. Memorial gifts may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
