Esther M. Cates

Esther C. Cates, 87, of Marion, IN, and a resident of Heritage Pointe of Huntington, died Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at Parkview Huntington Hospital.

Mrs. Cates graduated from Swayzee High School in 1948. She was a member of the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women, a lay member to the annual conference, was active in district women’s work and served on several committees. She was a cook at the church and a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the 20th Century Farm Club.

She was born June 2, 1930, in Marion to Quincy and Hazel Roe Small. She married Jesse Cates on May 13, 1951, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 2014.

Survivors include two sons, Ron (Teresa) Cates, of Marion, and Jim (Becky) Cates, of Fort Wayne; a sister, Faye Sites, of Swayzee; a brother, Vaughn Small, of Marion; a brother-in-law, Lester Cates, of Marion; four grandchildren, Jason (Lori) Cates, of Swayzee; Brian (Angela) Cates, of Marion; Kristi Cates, of Normal, IL; and Amy (Rich) Vail, of Fort Wayne; and eight great-grandchildren.

Calling is Friday, July 7, 2017, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, 2015 County Road 300W, Marion. A service will be held at the church on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 11 a.m., with calling one hour prior to the service. Rev. Douglas Barton will officiate. Entombment will be at Grant Memorial Park.
