Virgil R. Oxley

Virgil R. Oxley, 95, of Warren, IN, died Sunday afternoon, May 7, 2017, at Parkview Huntington Hospital.

Mr. Oxley, a former resident of Blountsville, worked primarily as a farmer for 30 years, retiring in 1967. He also worked at Westinghouse for six years, owned the airport at Winchester for 17 years, sold insurance and worked at Munson Car Sales for several years. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church, where he served as church trustee and head usher. He was also a member of Macra na Feirme Club and the Foresters Club. He made peanut brittle for the Muncie Optimus Club fund-raiser for many years. He was a 1939 graduate of Center High School and served in the Civil Air Corps/U.S. Navy Reserve as an aviation cadet from 1942 to 1945.

He was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Blountsville to Alvin H. and Ethel L. Keesling Oxley. He married Naomi Elizabeth Hunt on Nov. 25, 1945, at the Blountsville Methodist Church, and she survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Kevin L. (Eileen) Oxley, of Huntington, and Kent L. (Jody) Oxley, of Glen Ellyn, IL; six grandchildren, Michelle (Brad) Kathrins, of Glendale, AZ; Andrea K. (Charles) Douglass, of Huntington; Heather Oxley Yates and Aaron (Rayann) Oxley, both of Surprise, AZ; Sarah (Justin) Lowry, of Edwardsville, IL; and Matthew Oxley, of Madison, WI; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Calling is Friday, May 12, 2017, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, in Muncie. A service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 11 a.m., with calling one hour prior to the service, at High Street United Methodist Church, Muncie. Rev. Charlotte Overmyer will officiate. Burial will be at Blountsville Cemetery.
