Rev. Dr. Edmund C. Burkey

Rev. Dr. Edmund Carleton Burkey, 96, of Adrian, MI, and having ties to Huntington, IN, died Monday, April 3, 2017, at Hospice of Lenawee Home.
Rev. Dr. Burkey attended high school at the Evangelical Free Church Academy, in Chicago, IL. He studied at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, the University of Missouri and LaSalle-Peru College; earned a Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Monmouth College, in Monmouth, IL, in 1951; and received a Master of Arts in theology from the Winona Lake School of theology, in Winona Lake.
He began his preaching ministry in 1944 at the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, in Van Orin, IL, where he also served as teacher and principal. He was named pastor of College Park Church, in Huntington, in 1951, and led two major building programs at the church. He also counseled students at Huntington College. In 1966, he was named pastor of the First United Brethren Church, in Adrian, MI, which moved into a new facility in 1969 and was renamed Trenton Hills United Brethren Church. He became pastor of the Fellowship Bible Church, in Adrian, MI, in 1979, preaching there until he retired in 1993.
Rev. Dr. Burkey served the United Brethren Church as senior superintendent of North Ohio Conference, conference superintendent, district leader, conference secretary of education, secretary of church extension and secretary of conference council administration. He received an honorary doctorate from Huntington College in 1973 for his contributions to the denomination.
He was born July 2, 1920, in Tomah, WI, to Fred Noah and Francis Ebersole Burkey. He married Jean Scott in April of 1942, and she preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, David L. (Linda) Burkey, of Traverse City, MI; a daughter, Pamela S. (Richard) Swenor, of Charlevoix, MI; six grandchildren, Brant W. Burkey, of Seal Beach, CA; Jennifer J. (Dave) Spiller, of Elk Rapids, MI; Juli D. (Tino) Tripicchio, of Batttle Creek, MI; Kati S. (Ryan) Rafacz, of Murfreesboro, TN; Krista G. (Nick) Brennfoerder, of South Elgin, IL; and Daniel R. Swenor, of Traverse City, MI; and nine great-grandchildren.
Calling is Thursday, April 6, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with a service following at 11 a.m., at Wagley Funeral Home, in Adrian, MI. Rev. Kent Maxwell will officiate. Burial will be at Raisin Valley Cemetery, in Michigan.
