Sister Marita (Collette) Stoffel

Sister M. Marita (Collette) Stoffel, 102, of Mishawaka, IN, and a former resident of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, March 21, 2017.

Sister Stoffel attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School as a child and was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Huntington. She joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in 1931.

She was a teacher and taught at all levels of education. She earned a doctorate in education at Purdue University, where her research compared various teaching methods for elementary students, especially children with learning and behavioral challenges. She conducted an elementary school for students with learning and behavioral challenges in South Bend from 1968 until the school closed in 1986. She then taught adults working to acquire their GEDs until 2010.

She was born Jan. 15, 1915, in Huntington to Frank and Mary Stoffel.

Survivors include a sister, Helene Craig; and three brothers, William Stoffel, of Huntington; James Stoffel, of Jacksonville, FL; and Eugene Stoffel, of Syracuse.

A service will be held on Friday, March 24, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the St. Francis Motherhouse Main Chapel, in Mishawaka. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery.
