Russell 'Gene' Gilmer

Russell “Gene” Gilmer, 94, of Warren, IN, died Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at 12:38 p.m. at Heritage Pointe, in Warren.
Mr. Gilmer graduated in 1941 from Salamonie Consolidated Schools, in Warren. He served in the United Sates Coast Guard during World War II, from 1942 to 1946, and participated in the Normandy Invasion June 6 through July 24, 1944. He and his wife operated Shultz Café, in Warren, for several years. He later farmed and ran a chicken and egg operation. He was a lifetime member of Mt. Etna Lodge 333 Masonic and Scottish Rite, the Warren Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis.
He was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Huntington County to Francis I. and Emma Gilmer. He married Jo Ann Shultz on Jan. 19, 1947, in Warren, and she preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, William Ray Gilmer, of Port Huron, MI; two grandchildren, Gillian (Eric) Decker, of Marysville, MI, and Benjamin (Dena Gold) Gilmer, of Rochester, MI; and two great-grandchildren.
Calling is Saturday, March 11, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a service following at 1 p.m., at the Heritage Pointe Applegate Chapel, 801 Huntington Ave., Warren. Ginny Soultz, chaplain, will officiate. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Warren.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Heritage Pointe Applegate Chapel.
