Albertus 'Al' Vanden Top

Albertus “Al” Vanden Top, 81, of Bluffton, IN, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, at 9:20 a.m. at Heritage Pointe, in Warren, IN.

Mr. Vanden Top moved to Canada from the Netherlands at age 13 and served as a corporal in the Canadian Army from 1956 to 1960. After moving to Bluffton, he became an American citizen on Dec. 6, 1965. He earned an associate’s degree in accounting from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Indiana Wesleyan University.

He worked at Bachman Foods, in Bluffton, and as a senior tax accountant for Blue Flame Gas Company, in Bluffton, for 22 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Zanesville United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Bluffton, serving as church accountant at both churches.

He was born Dec. 24, 1934, in Barneveld, Netherlands, to Cornelus and Janet Dekkers Vanden Top. He married Marilyn S. Higgins on April 2, 1961, in Bluffton, and she survives in Warren.

Additional survivors include a son, Thomas G. (Heather) Vanden Top, of Yoder; a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Vanden Top, of Bluffton; a brother, Henry Vanden Top, of Brampton, Ontario, Canada; and five grandchildren, Hannah Vanden Top, Andrea Vanden Top, Grace Vanden Top, August Vanden Top and Eli Vanden Top.

Calling is Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Applegate Chapel of Heritage Pointe, in Warren, and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thoma/Rich, Lemler Funeral Home, in Bluffton. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Steve Bard officiating. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery, in Bluffton.
